Nicola Sturgeon and the British election

What is Nicola Sturgeon doing taking part in the election debates? She is not putting up as a candidate for Westminster and should have no place to play in the debates. The SNP representative on the panel should be one of the candidates standing in the election. It is obvious that she does not care for the UK but is only interested in Scotland.She is like a child. Give in to her on one thing and she demands more. She wants the earth. Having lost the referendum on Scottish independence, she now wants to bring it in by the back door.
Mark Brookes, the hero of my novel A Ceremony of Innocence is like that in that he takes any opportunity regardless of the consequences. In the sequel Innocence Exploded he finds out the consequences of his life style.

Sunday programme on Radio 4

I thought this programme content was a completely inappropriate for Easter Sunday morning. Though we might have sympathy for the Armenians to spend the whole programme on the Turkish genocide was not what the time should have been about.
Easter Sunday is all about the Resurrection and Gods love. The programme should have been about what the various Christian leaders had to say about Easter Sunday. There could have been the views of other religions.
It is a poor show from the BBC!

Church Attendance

Sitting looking round my church last Sunday I was once again struck by the age of the congregation. We have all grown old together in the main. There are a few younger ones but not many. Why is this?
Is it the message? Well, the message of love and caring for other is the same no matter what the church is called. This is true of the house churches and other non main stream christian gatherings. Do they keep the message and interpretation of that message as simple as possible? Are the main stream churches to hide bound in their theology that they make the message to complicated?
Is it the way services are conducted? We tend to follow a set pattern. Does this need to change with much more innovation and informality? Should we always emphasise the joy and positive uplift in following Jesus' teachings?
Is it the configuration of the church with immobile pews all facing the front and a pulpit? We have had endless discussions about this.
In my adult novel A CEREMONY OF INNOCENCE, Jim discusses this with his girlfriend Karen.

" I'll stay the night with you," Jim said his voice matter of fact. "I have to be up reasonably early so that I can get home in time to go to church with mum and dad."

" Do you still go to church when you are at home? " Karen asked as they climbed the stairs to her bedroom. " I can't recall you going to church while you have been at the university."

" Yes I still go sometimes when I am at home though I think it is more out of loyalty to mum and dad than out of any true conviction," Jim observed. " It is pleasant for us all to go together as a family."

He lent against the bedroom door frame for a moment lost in thought. "Actually, I suppose it is not only out of loyalty to my parents. There is something about going to church on a Sunday morning that attracts me as well. I can't really explain what I mean to anybody else. Let’s face it. Most of my friends would wince if they heard me talk like this. When I walk through the door of the church after shaking hands with the elder, a sense of peace descends a peace that has nothing to do with the people in the church or with the building. It is something to do with the atmosphere in the room. As the elders and the minister come into the church preceded by one of their number carrying the bible, a feeling of expectation fills the air. It is not the same excitement and expectation which fills a crowd at a football match but a sense of being part of something far more important than mere earthly problems. There is a joy in the hymn singing that does not accompany even the most popular songs. It is as though the congregation is uplifted by their singing and the music, as though they truly believe in the words they are singing. During the prayers, the silence is such that you could hear a pin drop. There is this feeling that all would be well in the world if only everybody would listen to the message. It is strange for an iconoclast like me but during the communion I have felt the presence of somebody else, inside but outside of me so to speak. I know most Christians are sinners during the week and saints on Sunday but they do attempt to follow their creeds. So you see it is not only out of a sense of loyalty to my parents which makes me go to church with them while I am at home."

Karen looked at Jim, her eyes wide with a sense of wonder. " I have never heard you talk like that about anything before."

ISIS

How can any civilised person in the world no matter their beliefs condone what ISIS is doing to our heritage? Who ordered the destruction of ancient artifacts and even buildings? What are they trying to prove?

Enemies to allies

Does not the US government realise that as situations change so does ones enemies and allies. Iran is helping to push back Isis and in these circumstances the US should swallow their objections and make the best of a situation which is helping them. Throughout history there have been exmples of enemies becoming allies to fight a common threat.

In my fantasy novel PRINCESS DAPHNE Edward Eastland decides to help the Princess who is fighting an enemy more powerful than she is. This is despite them being bitter enemies in the trilogy The Rombuli Saga. In book 3 she kills Edwards ally the King of the Elves when he was defenceless. Edward almost kills her in cold blood before being stopped by Tag and Nelvask, the magician. The question Edward has to ask and answer is whether as his sworn enemy he should go and help Princess Daphne. Even though this entails making a breach in the space time line, he decides to help.What finally makes up his mind is the thought of a greater evil taking over the world than the black elves of Princess Daphne.

Equality

A great many people in this country must have been appalled at the interview with the Indian rapist. It showed a complete disregard of women and place in society. At first the reaction would have been that in this country women have found their place alongside men. They are no longer seen as second class citizens.
This might be the case among certain parts of UK society but it is prevalent in all layers of society. I have heard from a few men especially those that see themselves as working class that a woman's place is in the home. They should leave school as soon as possible, work to provide income into the family home before getting married.

I approach this subject in my novel AN ORDINARY LIFE. At sixteen Tom mets Pat who is with his friend Derek and his girl friend. They discuss what takes place on the council estate close to where Tom lives.
 ' “ Look Tom, you are very naive when it comes to what goes on in the wider world,” Derek said with a grimace but with friendship in his voice. “ No don’t take offence, Tom. I am saying this as a friend. You live in a world where there is laughter and love. Your parents have tried to protect you from what happens out in the world outside your home. You and your brother both passed the eleven plus and went off to grammar school leaving this neighbourhood behind. Yes, I know you have kept friendly with me, Ray and Joe since going to school the other side of town but we do not see as much of each other as we used to when we went to the same school together. Lets face it, you live in a different world from the rest of us round here most of the time. Don’t get me wrong. I am not jealous of you but in some ways proud that somebody living on the wrong side of the tracks, like they say in American movies, is making a success of their lives.”

“ Me, I have to live with a father who beats his wife senseless every Friday night when he comes home drunk from the pub. A father who uses a strap on his children whenever he thinks they have been what he regards as disobedient. For as long as I can remember, he spends a lot of his dole money when he is not working on beer. Not only that but he has his way with his daughters. Why do you think Martha left home when she was sixteen and became a prostitute? To get away from my dad and what he was doing to her younger sisters. She challenged him to stop and all he did was laugh and beat her up.” Derek stopped speaking and stared off across the stream. Mavis was looking at him with concern while Pat showed no emotion.

“ Why didn’t you go to the police?” Tom asked innocently. He imagined that is what would happen in similar circumstances at his home or among his parent’s friends.

         Derek, and surprisingly to Tom, Pat laughed bitterly. It was Pat who answered. “Nobody goes to the police from where we come from. It is against the custom of the people living on our estate. Most people who live round where I live in the middle of that estate up there, hate the police. Well hate is too strong a word but they are suspicious of the police. They’re scared that if they call the police in for a small matter, the police will use that as an excuse to look further at what is happening on the estate and its surrounding area. As far as I know there are a lot of rogues living on our estate. Oh, not everybody is bent but a lot of people living there are. With the poverty and all, what else are they supposed to do? Most of those who are not bent will stick up for the other people on the estate, trying to sort out their problems between themselves. That is the obstacle to anything being done about family violence. Just like Derek’s, my dad used to beat us at the least little thing which upset him. We were lucky in that he did not try to interfere with my sister or me. He only stopped beating us last year when my uncle threatened to smash his head in if he did not show some regard for his family. Uncle Harry is even bigger and tougher than my dad. Dad has always worked so we have plenty of money to live on unlike some of the people. Did you know, I passed the eleven plus? My dad told me not to get ideas above my station. I would not go to grammar school because he could not afford to send me and, anyway, girls should leave school as soon as they were fifteen and go out to work to contribute to the household. It was not for girls to go to grammar school. One of these days, I will be free and then I will go to college."

The novel follows the life of Tom Houseman. From his early childhood on the edge of a hard council estate to eminent Professor with a worldwide reputation and great wealth. The story explores the manner in which most people regard themselves as honest and law abiding although there are times and circumstances when they ignore the rules of behaviour or of some moral code. These people justify their actions by ignoring their conscience or making excuses for their behaviour. In extreme cases they give the impression that morality is not an issue in their case.

Tom Houseman has a boyhood friend called Derek from the council estate and, though their paths diverge after junior school, he stays loyal to his friend. Derek becomes the right hand man of the criminal Mr. Big and introduces Edward. During his life, Edward accepts opportunities presented by his friends and his brother. These enhance both his standing in society and his wealth. All the time, he ignores and denies the moral and legal implications of taking advantage of these offers. As time passes, he has to accept the implications of his choices.

Will he finally have to face these hard decisions or will he sail serenely on living, to him, this ordinary life?

English Bishops and politics

So the Conservative Party is upset that the Bishops have had their say on the state of politics in this country. That is the opinions of the establishment down the ages. The profits of the Old Testament spent their time pointing out where the establishment was straying from the proper behavior. Jesus preached about the obligation to love thy neighbour and look after those in need.
It is only natural that the Bishops should point out that we have a moral duty to look after those less fortunate thn we are. Why is it that those who are well off cannot see they can afford to spend some of their money helping those in need. It is an easy target for the rich to cut help to the poor while giving those with the money the chance to shirk their obligations.
Why do those who have wealth try all the time to avoid tax? They can afford to pay. Unlike the vast majority who have their income tax deducted at source. Sitting in his protected environment, David Cameron leads a team who do not know what poverty is really about.
Good on you I say to the Bishops.
As for Russel Brand. My father always emphasised to me that it had taken years for everybody including women to get the vote and it is a slur on the memory of their struggle if people do not vote. As I used to tell my students, if you are not happy with the way things are run, get involved. Join a party or set up your own or run as an independent. Much as I dislike Nigel Farage and the underlying sentiment he propagates, at least he got involved. Come on Mr Brand. Lets see you run for Parliament instead of knocking those who do.
